Exoplanet Explorers is an exciting new addition to the Planet Hoppers series, an educational card game designed to introduce pupils to the fascinating world of planets beyond our solar system. Developed in partnership with STFC-funded researchers and Cardiff University astronomers, this game brings cutting-edge space science into the classroom in an interactive, accessible, and curriculum-aligned way.
Why Educators Should Use Exoplanet Explorers
REAL SCIENCE MEETS PLAY-BASED LEARNING
Cards feature real-world exoplanets, categorised by type, such as Gas Giants and Super Earths, and discovery methods like transit and radial velocity. The game introduces complex scientific ideas in a format that’s intuitive and engaging for pupils.
DESIGNED FOR THE CLASSROOM
Lessons begin with a game and build toward scientific inquiry; pupils can use the card data to calculate planetary density or create graphs to compare planet types.
ACTIVITIES LINK DIRECTLY TO THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM
Developed with input from local teachers and tested in classrooms, the game is carefully crafted to be inclusive and visually appealing to diverse learners, encouraging all students to see themselves as future scientists and explorers.
DIRECT LINK TO THE ESA ARIEL MISSION
The game serves as a springboard to understanding real space missions, such as Ariel (launching in 2029), which will explore exoplanet atmospheres, thereby creating a strong connection between classroom learning and contemporary scientific research.
Playtest WITH STUDENTS
After trials, students fed back that they “[learnt] about planets while also having fun with friends”. An educator appreciated that the game was “introducing something innovative to teaching”, saying that the game would be “engaging in our school”.
SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS
Co-created, curriculum-aligned classroom resources. Lesson plans, worksheets, and teacher guides tailored to the Curriculum for Wales. Activities that integrate science, numeracy, and digital skills. All resources are developed collaboratively with a Teacher Advisory Group and trialled in local schools to ensure practicality and effectiveness.
How EXOPLANET EXPLORERS Works
Each card includes:
An illustrated exoplanet with key stats; see the example.
Scientific classifications and summaries.
Space for gameplay and STEM-based activities.
The cards can be used in structured game formats or as data sources for hands-on inquiry tasks.
BROADER IMPACT
Exoplanet Explorers is part of a larger mission to make astronomy accessible to all, particularly learners in underserved communities. It is aligned with the STFC’s Wonder Initiative and supports sustained engagement through evaluation, training, and long-term outreach.
