Welcome

Space science for everyone.
The adventure begins here.

Planet Hoppers is a dynamic educational initiative developed at Cardiff University to make astronomy and space science accessible, exciting, and inclusive for pupils aged 8-14. Through gamified learning, utilising specially designed card games such as Star Sailors, Stellar Careers, and Exoplanet Explorers, we aim to spark curiosity, foster scientific understanding, and open doors to future STEM pathways for students from all backgrounds.

Our journey began with a simple idea: widening participation in schools by using accessible games. Working alongside researchers, educators, and teachers, we have created a suite of engaging and scientifically-informed resources that captivate young imaginations and align with curriculum goals. Star Sailors and Stellar Careers celebrate diversity, showcasing real-world space careers and astronomical discoveries. Exoplanet Explorers uses data from exoplanet research, allowing pupils to learn about the world beyond our solar system as well as the process of scientific discovery.

But Planet Hoppers is more than games. It's about community and collaboration. We work closely with teachers through co-creation, trialling resources in real classrooms, and listening to what works best for pupils. Our Teacher Advisory Group ensures every tool we offer is designed for practical classroom use and sustainability. Together, we're building a library of freely downloadable lesson plans and activities grounded in the latest academic research and informed by classroom experience.

Whether you're looking for ways to inspire students, resources for numeracy and literacy lessons set in the context of space, or opportunities to connect with a network of like-minded educators, Planet Hoppers is here for you.
